Poetry Out Loud

Anna Flurry and Adriana Hurtado perform their poems in Flagstaff at the next level of Poetry Out Loud.

This year’s Poetry Out Loud will be held by the National English Honors Society.

It will take place on January 31, 2013. For the purposes of the competition, students will be required to memorize two poems for the school competition, which will be recited in front of the school. For the state and national levels the student must memorize three poems, one of which needs to be 25 lines or fewer and one written before the 20th century. Poems eligible for the competition can be found on the Poetry Out Loud anthology online. Students reciting will be evaluated on physical presence, voice and articulation, dramatic appropriateness, level of difficulty, evidence of understanding, overall performance, and accuracy.

At the state level each winner will receive $200 and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C for the national competition (with adult chaperone) and $500 for their school. A runner up in each state will receive $100 and their school will receive $200 for poetry books.

Students must register!
