Mountain Biking Powers through “The Wall” in Toughest Race

By James Nebrig

The TCP Mountain Bike Team had its strongest outing yet as the NICA (National Interscholastic Cycling Association) tour came to Prescott on Sunday, September 25th for the hardest race of the year at White Spar Campground.

327 racers from all over Arizona endured the grueling course. This race featured “The Wall,” the toughest hill that racers will face all season as they fight for the top spots in the four divisions.  The racers representing TCP were seniors Eric Anderson, Tyler Kuckuck and Kate DuBroy; juniors Toby Merz, Kim Zamora, Clayton Evans and Max Baker; sophomores Kevin Anderson, Ethan Krafft and Hudson Coggins; and freshmen James Nebrig and Payton Kuckuck.

TCP’s sophomores led the way again with, Ethan Krafft on the podium in 5th place and Kevin Anderson in 7th place. In addition, senior Eric Anderson placed 9th in his race.

Ethan Krafft’s sister, Ellie Krafft, placed 4th in the middle school 6th grade girls’ race, which was her first ever competition. TCP looks forward to Ellie joining the Tri-City team in a few more years.

This was the second race of the season, with the next race being held in Sierra Vista, AZ on October 9th.  After the Sierra Vista race, two more races will be held this season at McDowell State Park, and White Tank Mountain Regional Park in Phoenix.  All students, parents, and the general public are always welcome to join in the excitement of the Arizona NICA race series.

The TCP Mountain Biking team would like to thank their generous sponsors, without whom they would be unable to compete.  This year’s sponsors include:  High Gear Bike Shop, Patterson Orthodontics, Horizon Dental, Watters Garden Center, Yavapai Pediatrics, Better Deal Printing and Prescott Import Car Service.
