Some may say scrunchies are ugly or old fashioned, but hold onto your hats because ladies and gentlemen, they are indeed making a comeback! For the longest time scrunchies were known for being ugly or old. They indeed were big during the late 1980’s and the early 1990’s, but now they are becoming big once again. They died out for a while and rubber bands were in. If you think about it; aren’t scrunchies better for your hair? A hair tie, “pulls your hair too aggressively, causing breakage” (Black).
Not only are they better for your hair, but they are also more comfortable. Have you ever had your hair up in a rubber band and gotten a headache? Well, scrunchies are loose and way more comfortable. Say goodbye to head pain and hello to scrunchies! I sometimes find myself going to put a hair tie/rubber band in my hair, then snap it breaks! The nice thing about scrunchies is that they have a fabric around them, and are much harder to break and therefore way more durable. Which means they last longer so you don’t have to invest in more.
Scrunchies are flexible and easy to do with many different styles. They can also add to your outfit as an accessory. You can wear scrunchies in many different ways. Some examples are: ponytail, topnotch, braid, bun and pigtails. They are easy to put in and easy to add a fun touch to your outfit. If you wear a hair tie around your wrist it leaves a red line where a scrunchie does not. They are less likely to get stuck in your hair.
There is research showing that “You get damage sometimes if the metal on the elastic snags the hair,” (Neil Grupp). Also, “Your hair gets damaged mostly during the detangling process when you take out traditional hair ties,” (Cash Lawless). Not to mention scrunchies are harder to lose. They are bigger and are usually a fun color that will stand out more than a normal rubber band.
Scrunchies can also be worn as a bracelet or if you want an anklet. They are fun and “out there”. Adding a splash of color to what may have been a dark day. Adding a hit of your own unique touch. If you’re not familiar with what a scrunchie is let me tell you. A scrunchie is a band that has a fabric around it that scrunches up in a certain area. It is used mainly to hold your hair up or if you prefer it, as a bracelet.
Scrunches were invented in 1987 by Rommy Revson. Scrunchies really became popular because in the 1980-1990’s, bigger and more elaborate things were in style. The scrunchie was created by a woman who found a hair tie uncomfortable and her elastic pajama pants to be way more soothing and boom the scrunchie was born. The scrunchie was originally known as the “Bunch Bangle”. The scrunchie itself is filled with many interesting facts and stories. So overall, scrunchies are back and are bigger than ever!
