Back in 1975 an album was released titled “A Night at the Opera”. However, this album was not full of operatic music. It was filled with rock music written by the famous band, Queen! Now, 43 years later a new and popular movie has made an appearance in theatres that is a biography/drama about the band’s history and music.
This movie features Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, Gwilym Lee as Brian May, Ben Hardy as Roger Taylor, and Joseph Mazzello as John Deacon. These are the band’s members. The band is originally from London and formed in 1970. Even though they were from Britain, they were widely loved in the US and beyond. Freddie Mercury was lead vocals and piano, Brian May was lead guitar, Roger Taylor was drums, and John Deacon was on the bass guitar.
This quartet had many experiences together including challenges that just simply come from being in a band. However, they also enjoy each other and go through a lot as a family. The movie shows how some of the famous songs including, “We Will Rock You”, “We are the Champions”, and of course (cause it’s in the title) “Bohemian Rhapsody” were created and written. Bohemian Rhapsody is a very complicated song that has many different sections including an operatic section that is written in a different language. All of the songs have an interesting story and history of where they came from.
When teenagers were interviewed, they gave this movie very good reviews. “I loved the music in the movie. It is really fun to watch,” said Fehin Long, a freshman at Tri-City Prep. Queen’s music has now returned as a hit and many people can be heard singing along and humming these classic songs. Jayden Jenkins stated, “I like how it shows where the band started and how they changed as their careers progressed.” Both students highly recommend this movie to others; in fact, Fehin said, “I would recommend this movie to everyone in the world!”
The movie also shows the personal lives of the characters, especially Freddie Mercury. Freddie went through a lot in his life including the discovery of his sexuality and his complicated love life. This movie also highlights the sad and early end to Freddie’s life. However, he was a very famous and successful person who was very accomplished. Overall, this movie was a wonderful mix of history, conflict, sadness, determination, and celebration! This movie will make you laugh, and it may make you cry, but you will leave with new knowledge of this famous band and many hit songs stuck in your head.
This movie is only in theatres for a limited time, so make sure you get out there to see it on the big screen. Go pick up a soda and a big box of popcorn at concessions and take a seat in those nice, reclining chairs at Picture Show and get ready for a wonderful performance. You will not want to miss it!
