Fall Break Fun

By: Breanna Clement

Fall Break is coming up and we are all trying to decide what to do with our week off. Some of us have a vacation planned and some of us don’t. Some of us had vacations planned but they were canceled due to the pandemic. Now you might be thinking, “What am I going to do now?” or “I’ll just go on my phone and play video games the whole week.” You can have fun without keeping your face glued to a screen. There is so much you can do to keep yourself busy. Here is a list of some things that you can do when you’re bored during the break:

Read a Book

So many teens refuse to pick up a book unless they have to. The only times they do so, is when it is required for school or if their parents force them to. If you don’t own any books, go to your local library and check out a few. Find something that interests you. The library has all sorts of good genres. There’s adventure, murder mystery, biography, romance, fantasy and so much more. If you think you don’t like reading, then you haven’t found the right book. Try it! You might end up discovering that you love to read.

Go for a Bike Ride

Fall is a great time to go outside and ride your bike. It’s too hot in the summer, but too cold in the winter. In the fall, the temperature is perfect. You can ride around the area and see all the beautiful scenery. You can even go with your family. If you live by a park, grab your family, ride to the park, and enjoy a picnic. There is life outside of screens. The real stuff is happening outside of the small screens that we spend most of our time on. If we didn’t spend so much time on our devices, we might see the beauty in the world around us.

Take your dog(s) for a walk (if you have one)

Most families have at least one dog. If that’s the case for your family, then you should consider this option. Your dog(s) will be so excited if you bring out a leash. Dogs know when you are taking them somewhere. Consider leaving your phone at home, and make the walk about you and your dog(s). If you want to take pictures, find an old Polaroid or a disposable camera just in case you find a picture perfect scene. Not only will you get good photos, you will also get some exercise in for both you and your dog(s).

Go for a drive

A lot of us are old enough to have a driver’s license. Fall break is a great time to take a drive around the neighborhood, and see the beautiful fall scenery.  If you’re able, you could consider visiting your grandparents if they don’t live too far away. You can even do your parents a favor by running errands for them. This way, they don’t have as much to do and you get to leave the house.

Instead of using your devices for social media, you can use it to pull up YouTube for karaoke. Don’t worry about singing in tune, you’re not trying to see who can sing on key and who can’t. It’s about having a good time. Get your family involved. Sing like nobody is watching. Sing at the top of your lungs. Put on a talent show if you want. Don’t have a microphone? Use your hairbrush! Just have fun with it.

You don’t need to use your devices all the time, because there is so much you can do without it. Everywhere you go it’s unlikely to see someone not using their cell phone. Life is so much more than what’s on the screen. We would see it if we would just put our devices down and take some time realizing how much better life is without them. Try it, you never know. You might end up liking the result, but you won’t know if you don’t try.
